The tradition of celebrating Father’s Day began in the early 1900s. The first day was celebrated on 19 June 1910 in the city of Fairmont in West Virginia, USA. There was a very poignant reason behind this- 210 people lost their lives in an accident in Mongah, West Virginia in 1907. He was all father.
After this tragic accident, a woman named ‘Lugress Golden Clayton’ suggested to dedicate one day in memory of all these late fathers. From this, the foundation of Father’s Day was laid and this day started to be celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June.
Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the US, Canada, Britain and many other countries including India. However, in some countries its date is different. Father’s Day is celebrated in the month of August in Spain and Portugal. This special day in Thailand is celebrated in December. According to the culture and traditions of every country, the date of celebrating the day may be different, but the objective is the same- to respect the father’s contribution.
