Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The Indian government has launched a high-level investigation into the catastrophic Air India crash in Ahmedabad that killed 241 people, with Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu announcing the formation of a special committee tasked with delivering a comprehensive report within three months.
Speaking at a press briefing in Delhi, Naidu confirmed the committee will be chaired by the Union Home Secretary and will bring together top officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force, state disaster authorities, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
“We have put a time limit of three months for them to talk to various stakeholders and discuss with any other important expert that is necessary,” Naidu stated, emphasizing the urgency of the probe. The panel’s first meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 16.
Its wide-ranging mandate includes assessing the emergency response, reviewing existing safety guidelines, studying past air crashes, and ultimately developing a new, comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to manage future incidents.
A critical breakthrough in the investigation came with the recovery of the flight’s black box (the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder). Naidu highlighted its importance, stating, “The decoding of the black box is going to give an in-depth insight into what would have actually happened… We are eagerly waiting for what the results will be once the AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) goes through its full investigation.”
The crash involved an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London, which went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. There was only one survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, among the 242 people on board.
In response to the tragedy, Naidu announced that safety oversight is being immediately ramped up across the entire Indian fleet of that aircraft model. The DGCA has ordered “extended surveillance” on all 34 Boeing 787s operating in India. “I believe that 8 have already been inspected and with immediate urgency, all of them are going to be done,” he assured.
Expressing deep empathy for the grieving families, Naidu shared a personal note of his own. “I also personally lost my father in a road accident,” he said. “So to a certain extent, I can understand the pain and anguish that the family members are feeling.”
