Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Central Law Minister, has publicly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the recent gang rape case in Kolkata. He accused Banerjee of engaging in appeasement politics and stated that the law and order situation in West Bengal has completely deteriorated. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also alleged that the police are not acting swiftly enough in this matter. In connection with the gang rape incident, four individuals have been arrested.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has reached out to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, urging immediate action regarding the gang rape case that occurred in South Kolkata. The NCW has requested cooperation from the state police to facilitate a meeting between its members and the victim along with her family. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar described the incident as grave, stating it has shaken the conscience of the public. The commission took cognizance of the case on Friday and emphasized the need for prompt action. In her letter to the Chief Secretary, Rahatkar instructed the police to fully cooperate with NCW member Archana Majumdar, who has been appointed to meet with the victim and her family.
A first-year student from South Calcutta Law College reported to the police that on the evening of June 25, she was gang-raped by a former student of the institution along with two senior students. The three accused were arrested on Thursday, and the victim underwent a medical examination on the same day. The examination revealed external injuries on her private parts and thighs, as well as marks around her neck. Police suspect that the main accused orchestrated the attack in retaliation for the victim rejecting a marriage proposal. The medical examination confirmed that the victim was indeed gang-raped.
