A powerful citizen-led campaign to halt construction in the Kharghar forest is gaining rapid support, with over 900 people signing a petition in just six days. The petition, started by local resident and avid hiker Ricky Agarwal, calls for an immediate stop to what he describes as “unnecessary and harmful” development in the ecologically sensitive region.

Ricky, who frequents the forest trails, was moved to act after witnessing firsthand the disruption caused by construction equipment and debris. On the petition page he does not want to remain silent while the forest he loves to trek is being torn apart. This isn’t just about trees, it's about the entire ecosystem and the future we’re leaving behind, he said.

Backed by studies from the Ecobiology Research Institute, the petition highlights the presence of rare and endangered species in the forest area, warning that continued destruction could push some to the brink of extinction. It also draws attention to the role of forests in combating climate change, referencing IPCC findings on the importance of green cover in carbon absorption.

Since launching the petition, Ricky has seen overwhelming community support. Local residents, environmentalists, and nature lovers from across Navi Mumbai have rallied behind the cause, sharing the petition widely on social media and urging others to join in.

“We need more responsible planning. Development can’t come at the cost of our environment,” the petition reads, demanding that authorities re-evaluate construction activities and implement stricter environmental safeguards.

With momentum building, Ricky hopes the growing number of signatures will pressure officials to act before it’s too late. “This forest belongs to all of us—and it’s time we stand up for it,” he said.
