New Delhi: It was interesting Englands new batting approach in the Lords Test after a humiliating 336-run defeat in the second Test at Edgbaston against India. Indian players were quick to mock England as skipper Shubman Gill and pacer Mohammed Siraj took shots at the English batters.
To give some background England have experienced a drastic change in their Test game since Ben Stokes became captain and Brendon McCullum became coach. The team has always put the points per scorer rate to the test and it has adopted an ultra-aggressive brand of play. The Stokes-McCullum era has seen England able to bat at an incredible run rate of 4.60 since June 2022 which redefined how one can play the Test cricket.
On Day One however England came out somewhat more circumspect in their attack at a rate of 3.02 per over which is considerably slower than what they would be used to in their Bazball approach. That was another significant change when the toss was done and England decided to have first go at bat even though they had thrown the first two Tests in their bowling. It is only the second such decision that they have taken to bat first in the Bazball era after winning a home toss and the first since the opening Test of the 2023 Ashes at Birmingham. This is their all-time lowest score in a single day under Bazball: the total of stumps is 251 for the loss of 4 wickets and the first time they have not managed to reach 300 runs in one day.
Mohammed Siraj trolls Joe Root
At the beginning of the second session Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj made a decision to get some fun and started sledging England batting mainstay Joe Root yelling to play Bazball at the home team.
Where is Bazball. Baz Baz Bazball. Play Bazball. I want to see Siraj was heard saying by the stump-mic.
England were piled under so much pressure early in the second session as the pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had a scorching spell taking 28 dot balls between the Joe Root and Ollie Pope.
Shubman Gill takes shots against England
The Indian captain Shubman Gill was not shy when it came to trying to rile the English team on the second session. Gill even poked the England bowling tactics with a cheeky remark about Bazball on the stump mic at one point when Ollie Pope decided to allow a delivery by Jasprit Bumrah to reach the boundary of Lord s.
No more entertaining cricket welcome back to boring Test cricket guys Gill was heard saying.
There is a lot at stake as Lord Test plays out in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and the five- match series is in a very level 1-1. England got off to a flying start with a five wicket victory at the first game which saw them chase down 371 only to be hit by a very big comeback win by India at Birmingham to square off the series.
