According to 8worldwhile filming the variety show “Call Me by Fire” earlier this month, Zhang revealed he had spent the past three months resting and recovering. In April, during a family trip abroad, he suddenly experienced chest pain, shortness of breath, and profuse sweating. At the time, Choi was about 10 meters away, but Zhang was unable to call for help as his body began to collapse.

“All I could think was: ‘I can’t die here. She still has to take care of our three children. What should I do?’” he recalled.

Zhang managed to regain his footing and return to Hong Kong for treatment. Doctors later confirmed his condition had been life-threatening. He underwent percutaneous coronary intervention to alleviate symptoms, improve breathing, and minimize heart muscle damage after the attack.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Zhang said: “It was the first time I’d been so close to death. Just one moment of closing my eyes, and I might never see my loved ones again.”

Throughout his recovery, Choi stayed by his side, putting her career on hold. She researched suitable meal plans and prepared three daily meals tailored to his needs, while their children kept him entertained and optimistic.

Choi, 52, rose to fame after placing second runner-up in the 1991 Miss Hong Kong pageant and later signing with TVB. She won the TVB Anniversary Award for Best Actress in 1998 for her role in “Secret of the Heart” and was regarded as one of the network’s “Five Fa Dans”—alongside Maggie Cheung, Kenix Kwok, Flora Chan, and Jessica Hsuan—during the mid-1990s to mid-2000s.

Zhang, 51, began his career as a stunt actor, notably serving as Zhang Ziyi’s stunt double in the 2000 film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” He went on to win Best Supporting Actor at the 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards in 2014.

The couple married in 2008 and have three children.
