Student politics of Delhi University has long been under control of some influential individuals, political parties and hooliganism groups. Election tickets are now distributed on the basis of money, caste and muscle power rather than issues. Important issues that laid the foundation of student politics such as fees hike, hostels and labs, women safety and discrimination have been silent for years. The ABVP and NSUI operated the campus as a private contract, where they set up the DUSU student union in turn. But the voice of the interests of the students was never raised.
This time the student organization of Aam Aadmi Party will participate in Essap DUSU Students Union elections and will challenge ABVP and NSUI’s hooliganism. Essap believes that student politics cannot be the property of leaders of any one party. Leadership should be in the hands of students who are good in studies, hardworking, honest and want to improve their college and university.
Students who want to contest the election of DUSU or College Union will have to complete three simple steps. First, a registration form will have to be filled, the last date of which is 25 August. Secondly, one minute video or audio will have to be made in which they will clear their issues clearly. Third, you have to explain your agenda in 200-500 words. For the college union, 10 students from 5 different sections have to gather support and DUSU is required to support 50 students from 5 colleges.
Essap politics is based on transparency, accountability and issues. This is an attempt to bring the leadership back to the students by removing it from some hands. This is not just an organization, but a movement that wants leaders from the university to emerge from the university who become the voice of the people, fight corruption and strengthen democracy. This time there will be neither money nor muscle power in DUSU elections. This time your vision, your intention and your thinking will be important. Essap tells every student that if you still silence, then the possibility of change will be postponed again. But if you get up and come forward, then the face of Delhi University politics will change forever.
