Quentin Tarantino Explains the Reason Behind the Delay of His 10th Film: Who Would Be Interested in a Movie Centered on a Film Critic?
Quentin Tarantino has finally explained the reasons behind his decision to cancel the highly awaited project The Movie Critic, which had been speculated to be his tenth and final feature film. In a discussion on the Church of Tarantino podcast, the renowned director shared that although he appreciated the script, he ultimately lost interest in bringing it to life as it felt too reminiscent of his 2019 Oscar-winning film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Quentin's waning enthusiasm for the project stemmed from...
“I wasn’t particularly thrilled about adapting what I had written during pre-production, partly because I was applying the skills I gained from
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood [of] ‘How are we going to recreate Los Angeles as the Hollywood of 1969 without relying on CGI?’” Tarantino elaborated. “It was a challenge we had to meet. We needed to pull it off. It wasn’t guaranteed that we could do it. …
The Movie Critic, there was nothing to solve. I already had a good idea of how to transform L.A. into a bygone era. It felt too similar to the previous one.”
Set in 1977,
The Movie Critic was initially conceived as an eight-episode television series, a concept Tarantino had hinted at in 2022. Although he ultimately decided to put the project on hold, the filmmaker confessed that he still has a fondness for the script and the challenge it posed.

Tarantino's self-imposed challenge
“The interesting thing about
The Movie Critic is that I genuinely like it. However, I set a challenge for myself when I worked on it. ‘Can I take the most mundane profession in the world and turn it into an engaging film?’” he remarked. “Who would want to watch a TV show about a movie critic? Who would be interested in a film titled
The Movie Critic? That was the challenge. If I could actually create a movie or a TV show about someone who critiques films and make it captivating, that would be an achievement. And I believe I succeeded.”
After deciding to shelve
The Movie Critic, Tarantino redirected his attention to
The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a spin-off and true sequel to
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Written and produced by Tarantino, the Netflix project is being helmed by David Fincher and is currently in production in Los Angeles.
