KARACHI:What was intended to be a festive Independence Day morning broadcast has sparked an online storm after a segment of Nida Yasir’s show drew widespread criticism for inappropriate remarks made by celebrity guests.

The programme, aired on August 14 to mark Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, featured popular television figures Bushra Ansari, Faisal Qureshi, and Yasir Hussain. However, a portion of their lighthearted banter quickly turned controversial, leaving audiences dismayed.

In a video clip that went viral on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, Yasir is seen holding cue cards for a segment, one of which bore the sketch of a traditional charpoy. Bushra Ansari initiated commentary on the image with what many viewers deemed an “unsuitable” remark. The exchange was then carried forward by Yasir Hussain and Faisal Qureshi in a manner that audiences found inappropriate, particularly given the national context of the show.

Viewers questioned the ethics of airing such content on a day meant for patriotic reflection and celebration. “This was a family programme, especially designed for Independence Day. What values are we teaching the younger generation with such casual remarks?” one user commented. Others argued that the conversation reflected poorly on the entertainment industry’s sense of responsibility during national occasions.

Criticism also extended towards the host, Nida Yasir, who has often been a target of online backlash for what some describe as frivolous segments or tone-deaf commentary. Many users accused her of failing to maintain decorum on an occasion that demanded solemnity and national pride.

“The issue is not humour itself, but the timing and context. To turn Independence Day into an opportunity for inappropriate jokes shows a lack of respect for the occasion,” another social media post read.

Despite the backlash, the clip continued to circulate widely, fuelling debate about the line between humour and indecency on mainstream television. Media analysts noted that the controversy underscored broader concerns about editorial oversight in morning shows, which often prioritise entertainment over sensitivity.

Neither Nida Yasir nor the participating celebrities have so far issued a public response to the criticism. However, the backlash highlights a growing demand for stricter broadcast standards, particularly for family-oriented programmes aired on significant national days.
