UPI update: The most popular digital payment system in the country is going to be a big change in UPI (Unified Payments Interface). The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that the Person-to-Person (P2P) Money Request feature will be completely discontinued from 1 October 2025. This step has been taken to curb growing online frauds and scams.

With the help of Money Request feature, people could easily ask for money from friends or family, such as distributing bills after dinner or reminding of any old borrowing. But while misusing this feature, the thugs implicated the people and sent a fake request to the money from their account. Now NPCI has decided to completely remove it.

Why is the money request feature being removed?

The Collect request facility in UPI was initially a convenient tool. But over time it became an easy means of fraud. Many users used to consider fake requests as real and their money used to go out directly from the account. NPCI has instructed banks, payment service providers and UPI apps that no P2P collecting transaction should be started nor processed from 2 October 2025.

Which features of UPI will continue?

Even after this change, the use of UPI will be as easy as before. You still-

  • You can send money immediately from mobile number, UPI ID or bank details.

  • You can pay by scanning QR code.

  • You can approve the payment request from verified merchants like delivery apps or online shopping.

This change will only apply to Person-to-Person Collection Request. At the same time, merchant collection requests will continue as before and more transaction limit will also be available on them. (There was a limit of ₹ 2,000 earlier on P2P request.)

NPCI explained why the feature was killed

NPCI says that this decision has been taken to protect consumers and increase trust in UPI. According to him, it aims to protect consumers and strengthen confidence in UPI. Inadvertently clicking users on the fake request sent by fraudsters was very common. Therefore, to end this feature was the best option according to NPCI.

What will change for users?

Now if you have to ask for money from someone, then you have to share your UPI ID directly, send QR code or send a reminder through WhatsApp/Message. i.e, "Request" The shortcut facility of the feature will end.

This change will not have any major impact for most users. The process of sending money will be as fast, easy and free as before. The only difference will be that now the thugs will have a less weapon of fraud.
