For many of us, a bowl of cereal with milk is the perfect start to the morning. With the UK offering some of the most diverse and innovative flavours of the breakfast staple, it's not every day that cereal connoisseurs are surprised by a brand's offering. Yet that was exactly the case recently. Kellogg's has launched a fresh cereal across UK supermarkets and avid cereal consumers have all made the same observation.

A box of Kellogg's Smacks has been discovered on Morrisons' shelves, priced at £2.50, and customers buying the product reckon it bears a striking resemblance to a beloved discontinued classic, adored by the British public. The breakfast option - crafted from puffed wheat and enhanced with honey - has already proven popular across the Atlantic. It's promoted as a "classic crunchy breakfast cereal" boasting a "honey-sweet taste," indicating it targets those who favour traditional, sugary cereals which deliver a satisfying (and nostalgic) crunch.

It's also said to be made without artificial colours and flavours, and boasts of being rich in vitamin D. Consumers must exercise caution though, as a 30g serving of Kellogg's Smacks contains a whopping 10g of sugar.

Since its discovery on supermarket shelves, some British consumers have concluded Kellogg's latest offering bears a remarkable similarity to a discontinued cereal they recall with affection.

A now-viral post with a photo of the newly-released Kellogg's Smacks was posted on the popular Facebook group Snack Reviews on August 16 - and it has triggered an avalanche of responses and impassioned reactions from the group's members.

The post rapidly gathered momentum, with hundreds of participants contributing their opinions. Numerous comments suggested Smacks brought back memories of Sugar Puffs - the cherished Quaker Oats breakfast favourite that vanished from shelves in 2014 much to the dismay of cereal lovers world over.

The sentimental connection awakened recollections for devoted enthusiasts, who observed the comparable puffed wheat consistency and golden colour.

One participant commented, "Basically sugar puffs then lol," while another commented, "Look like sugar puffs."

While a third contributed: "They'll always be sugar puffs to me. They're puffed wheat and sugar."

Another cheeky commenter stated: "In other words, they've brought out sugar puffs again & called it a different name."

And yet another cereal fan commented: "They're not new! Every kid used to have these when they forced their parents to get those multi packs of mini boxes of cereal, they'd be wedged somewhere between the ricicles and honey nut loops. With a frog."

A sixth cereal lover remarked: "I brought these back from Paris coz they were the nearest thing to sugar puffs I've ever tried, Amazing, hopefully they stick around."

The iconic breakfast cereal, Sugar Puffs from Quaker Oats, underwent a significant transformation when it was rebranded as Honey Monster Puffs. The name change was accompanied by a revamped recipe, designed to meet evolving health standards.

The new version boasted a reduced sugar content and an enhanced honey flavour, marking a conscious departure from the original formula that had been a mainstay in British homes for decades.

This alteration was part of a wider initiative driven by government efforts to combat excessive sugar intake, especially in products aimed at children. Amid growing concerns about childhood obesity and dietary health, brands were urged - or pressured - to revise their recipes to comply with stricter nutritional guidelines.

Before the rebranding took place, Sugar Puffs had enjoyed an impressive 60-year run, making this shift a notable moment in UK cereal history.
