School Holidays in Kerala: 10-Day Break for Onam Festival, Schools to Reopen on September 8

Thiruvananthapuram – The festive season has begun in Kerala, and with it comes a long-awaited vacation for schoolchildren. On the occasion of Onam 2025, schools across the state have announced a 10-day holiday, giving students ample time to celebrate Kerala’s most important festival with their families.

According to the official calendar, schools in Kerala will remain closed till September 7, 2025. Classes will resume from September 8, with regular academic activities continuing as usual. Despite heavy monsoon rains in parts of the state, families are preparing to mark Onam with traditional feasts, cultural programs, and community celebrations.

Onam is celebrated as a tribute to King Mahabali, who is remembered as a just and beloved ruler. As per legend, Kerala experienced its most prosperous era during his reign, and it is believed that he visits his people every year during Onam. The festival lasts for 10 days, each marked by rituals, flower decorations (Pookkalam), traditional games, folk dances, and the grand Onam Sadya, a feast served on banana leaves.

The holiday schedule is also aligned with the academic calendar. Most schools in Kerala completed their half-yearly examinations before the vacation began. Teachers will use the break to evaluate answer sheets and prepare results, which are expected to be shared with students soon after classes resume on September 8.

Education officials have advised students to spend some time revising their lessons during the break but also encouraged them to actively participate in cultural activities linked to Onam. Parents have been requested to stay updated by checking official circulars from schools or notifications issued by the Kerala General Education Department.

For children, the Onam holidays are not just about relaxation but also about connecting with Kerala’s cultural heritage. From vibrant boat races to folk performances and festive meals, the celebration reflects the state’s unity, traditions, and joy.
