Bank Holiday on September 5: RBI Declares Closure in Several States for Eid-e-Milad and Onam
If you are planning to visit your bank this Friday, you may need to check the holiday list first. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks in several parts of the country will remain closed on Friday, September 5, 2025, due to the celebrations of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi and Thiruvonam (Onam). Both public and private sector banks in the notified regions will observe the holiday, while banking operations in other states will continue as usual.
The RBI’s official holiday schedule lists September 5 as a bank holiday in specific regions.
Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, also known as Milad-e-Sharif or Barawafat, is an important day for the Muslim community, marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. The day is observed with prayers, recitation of the Quran, processions, and charitable acts. Mosques and homes are decorated, and people extend help to the needy.
Thiruvonam (Onam), the most significant festival of Kerala, will also be celebrated on the same day. Onam is marked by grand feasts, traditional games, boat races, and cultural performances, symbolizing prosperity and happiness.
On September 5, banks will remain closed in major cities including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and parts of Kerala for Eid-e-Milad and Onam. Customers in these locations are advised to plan their cash deposits, withdrawals, and cheque clearances in advance.
In states not covered by the RBI holiday list, banks will function normally. Digital banking and mobile banking services will remain available across the country without disruption.
