King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a spectacular state banquet for Donald Trump featuring an exquisite three-course menu and a prestigious selection of wine and drinks. The three-course menu consisted of Hampshire watercress panna cotta with Parmesan shortbread and quail egg salad, chicken ballotin with a thyme and savoury-infused jus, and a vanilla ice cream bombe with Kentish raspberry sorbet and lightly poached Victoria plums.

Four carefully selected wines accompanied the meal, but the 160 guests were treated to more alcohol afterwards. To honour the American president, the King and Queen offered Warre's 1945 Vintage Port, in recognition of Mr Trump as the 45th and 47th President of the United States. Also on offer is Hennessy 1912 Cognac Grand Champagne, in honour of The President's mother's birth year and Bowmore Queen's Cask 1980, Islay, a gift to the late Queen Elizabeth in 1980, which was bottled for her Golden Jubilee in 2002.

A special cocktail was created for the occasion, called Transatlantic Whisky Sour, a UK/US twist on the classic Whisky Sour, blending Johnnie Walker Black with marmalade, a pecan foam and garnished with a toasted marshmallow set on a star-shaped biscuit, evoking the warmth of a fireside S'more.

However, the US President is thought to not have sampled any of the drinks on offer on Wednesday night for one simple reason.

Mr Trump is a teetotaller, so he did not indulge in sampling the variety of vintage drinks on offer, nor the cocktail.

Mr Trump's aversion to alcohol is down to the sad reason that his older brother, Fred Trump Jr., died from a heart attack caused by his alcoholism.

The US President's brother was only 42 at the time of his death in 1981.

It is understood the White House made him aware of what was served and the care and thought behind each selection.

Mr Trump spoke about his distance from drinking in 2017, shortly after he was elected as US President for the first time.

He told Fox News: "I've never had a drink."

Regarding his brother's death, which contributed to him not drinking, he revealed: "It was a very tough period of time.

"If you don't start, you're never going to have a problem. If you do start you might have a problem. And it's a tough problem to stop."

In his speech during the state banquet on Wednesday, Mr Trump spoke of the "lionhearted kingdom" and the "very special" Royal Family.

Addressing the King, he said: "I have such respect for you and such respect for this country".

He added that the two nations are "each beautiful on its own but really meant to be together".

"The bond is priceless, eternal, irreplaceable and unbreakable," he said.

Mr Trump heaped praise on the King and Queen, saying: "A very, very special man, and also a very, very special queen. It's a great honour to be with you."

He also said the Princess of Wales was "so radiant and so healthy".
