Dabbu Malik once a rising music composer faced years of struggle in Bollywood. Despite his talent the industry didn’t offer him the recognition he deserved. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan in a revealing interview Dabbu shared that while his brother Anu Malik continued to achieve success he was forced to take work wherever he could often at the mercy of former collaborators.
I was living a fake life Dabbu confessed. I didn’t want the world to see that I was broken. I reached a point where I had to ask a very popular singer someone I had worked with before for a small gig in her live show. Just one or two songs or some performance.
Humiliation at the hands of former collaborators
Dabbu’s honesty about the incident is striking. “The next day someone from her team called to tell me that they had booked a train ticket for me with other musicians. Instead of respect they tried to humiliate me. When you are at rock bottom people can sense it and exploit it. I didn’t perform that show.”
He further revealed the emotional toll this took on him. “I never felt like I was truly part of the film industry. While my brother was enjoying success I was falling apart. For 15-20 years I had almost nothing.”
Turning struggles into family pride
Despite these hardships Dabbu Malik says his greatest achievement is his family. “I am proud of my sons’ achievements. One son gifts me a car another a luxury car. One son gives me a watch another an expensive watch. Their drive is to give me everything I never had in my career.”
Dabbu shared that his sacrifices were purposeful. “When my father was dying he told me not to deny my children the musical training we missed. I sold my properties my house and my jewellery to ensure Armaan could study in Boston and Amal could receive the training he needed.”
A salute to his wife Jyoti
Dabbu credits his wife Jyoti for holding the family together during tough times. “She worked as a teacher and became the main breadwinner when we needed her the most” he said. Her support allowed Dabbu to focus on his music and rebuild their lives.
Today Dabbu’s legacy extends beyond his career. His son Amal is making waves as a contestant on Bigg Boss 19 showing that the family’s determination and hard work continue to pay off.
