Good news is on the horizon for LPG consumers in India. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is preparing to introduce an LPG Interoperability Framework, allowing consumers to switch their gas provider without obtaining a new connection. The system will work similarly to mobile number portability (MNP), meaning that households with existing Indane connections can easily switch to Bharat Gas or HP Gas in the future without changing their equipment.
According to PNGRB, LPG has reached nearly every household in India, with over 32 crore active connections. However, around 17 lakh complaints are filed annually, mostly related to delays in cylinder delivery and supply disruption.
Currently, consumers have limited options if their local dealer faces stock shortages or other operational issues. PNGRB emphasized that cylinder prices are uniform across companies, so consumers should have the freedom to choose their dealer and provider based on service quality.
The upcoming inter-company portability system aims to remove existing restrictions and provide greater convenience and confidence to consumers. PNGRB is seeking feedback from LPG users, dealers, and citizen groups to finalize the framework.
Under this system:
If a local Indane dealer is out of stock, consumers can temporarily refill cylinders from Bharat Gas or HP Gas.
Consumers dissatisfied with their current provider can permanently switch to another company without replacing the existing cylinder or equipment.
This reform will make LPG services more flexible, reliable, and consumer-friendly, similar to how users can switch mobile networks while retaining their number.
Reduced delays in cylinder delivery.
Greater choice in selecting LPG providers.
Enhanced service quality, as companies will compete for consumer satisfaction.
No need for new connections or additional equipment, simplifying the switching process.
PNGRB will consider public suggestions before setting a nationwide rollout date. Once implemented, LPG consumers across India can enjoy seamless portability, ensuring uninterrupted gas supply and improved service standards.
