Eyes Tell Your Health: Our eyes are not only a means of seeing the world but sometimes they also become the mirror of our health. According to the American Society of Ophthalmology, changes in eye color are very rare, but sometimes the color of the whites of the eyes or the pupils may appear to change. This usually happens due to light, glare or other external reasons, but sometimes it can also be a sign of diseases growing in the body.

Reasons for changing eye color

Change in eye color or appearance of a different color can occur due to many reasons such as genetic factors, diseases, medicines or any kind of injury (trauma). Usually it is not harmful, but sometimes it can be a sign of serious health problems.

yellowing of eyes

If the whites of your eyes start looking yellow, it could be a sign of jaundice. This happens when the liver does not function properly and the amount of a substance called bilirubin increases in the blood. Due to this the skin and eyes start appearing yellow. This condition indicates liver disease or infection.

Iris Freckles

These are small brown spots formed on the surface of the eyes which are formed due to the accumulation of melanin. These are commonly found in people who spend more time in the sun. Although these are not harmful, but if their shape or color starts changing rapidly, then it is important to get checked by a doctor.

Iris Nevi

Iris nevi are larger and darker bumps than iris freckles that appear like moles on the eyes. These are formed from an abundance of pigment cells called melanocytes. This condition is rare and sometimes can also cause the risk of cancer (Melanoma). Therefore, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Lisch Nodules

Lisch nodules are small brown bumps that are commonly associated with a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis. This is a nervous system disorder, in which small tumors develop on the cells of the nervous system. Although they do not affect eye vision, their presence helps the doctor to diagnose the disease.

Consult an eye doctor

Change in eye color should not be taken lightly. If you notice any abnormality, color change or spots in your eyes, immediately consult an eye doctor. Only timely detection can protect your eyes and health.
