A TalkTV star left the host speechless as she demanded that women who want to wear burkas return to their own country. On Monday (October 13),Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin joined Mike Graham on his morning show to discuss the popular garment many Muslim women choose to wear. The attire covers the whole body from head to toe, with a single opening for the eyes on the headwear.
It comes after Giorgia Meloni proposed a burka and niqab ban in public places in Italy with fines of £2,600 to stop "Islamic separatism". The bill, presented to parliament by the Italian prime minister's Brothers of Italy party last Wednesday (October 9, would see those wearing the garment in shops, offices, schools, and universities fined between £260 and £2,600.
It's fair to say the politician certainly didn't hold her tongue when she was quizzed about the garment on the show. She fumed: "Equally as importantly is the issue of female suppression. This is a misogynistic garment.
"If they want to wear it, if men want their women to wear it, if women want to wear it, fine. Go back to your countries where it is acceptable because it is not acceptable in this country."
She went on: "We are a Christian country, we are fundamentally living by Christian values. We respect other religions, but this is an oppression on our streets. I see it everywhere, particularly when I'm in London."
It didn't take long before viewers flocked to X-formerly known as Twitter-to share their thoughts on the divisive topic. Some viewers agreed with her comments, with one user writing: "She is right; it's misogyny," and another adding: "I completely agree with her."
A third echoed: "At last, someone said it. Britain didn't fight wars for women's rights just to tiptoe around those who want to drag them back to the Dark Ages. If you think covering women head to toe is empowerment, you've mistaken oppression for culture and submission for faith."
Meanwhile, others disagreed with the politician, pointing out that it is out of respect for their religion. One user argued: "I wonder if she'd say the same about nuns wearing their full-body attire."
A third fumed: "That goes against freedom of religion, expression, and worship. I thought these Reform MPs were supposed to be protecting British values."
Another added: "Sarah Pochin is an extremist who doesn't speak for the country. If she doesn't like multiculturalism, she should leave".
