Back in 2018, Raj & DK wrote a horror comedy which went on to become a big box office success earning over Rs 100 crore at the box office. The movie was Stree starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor anddirected by Amar Kaushik.

Four years later, in 2022, the makers returned with the second film in the Stree Universe titled Bhediya starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon.

In 2024, the third movie in the horror comedy universe Munjya released and became a surprise success. It was followed by Stree 2 which broke many box office records.

Now, more than a year later, the fifth movie in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) Thamma has been released in theatres. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar of Munjya fame, it stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles.

The latest horror comedy universe movie released amid low buzz but has managed to impress the audiences by scaring them as well as leaving them in splits.

Sharing their reviews of Thamma, trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “Thamma: TERRIFIC. Rating: 4/5. Maddock Films delivers yet another winner… A delicious cocktail of humour, supernatural, and romance... Takes a completely uncharted path as far as the plot goes… EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!”

He further wrote, “The plot is entirely novel for #Hindi movie audiences, and that is its biggest strength... The film draws inspiration from #Indian folklore, and the narrative remains engaging throughout – keeping you hooked, entertained, and guessing right until the finale. Besides the razor-sharp writing, the witty one-liners and clever twists are a major plus.”

Another social media user reviewed, “Thamma is an engaging mix of emotion, drama, and unpredictability. The first half focuses on building the story a bit slow at times, but it sets the stage well. The second half, however, really picks up and delivers an impressive payoff.”

Thamma has released alongside Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa’s intense romantic musical Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat.

Both the movies have opened well at the box office becoming the biggest openers of their respected lead stars.

While Thamma is expected to open in the Rs 17-22 crore range, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat may hit Rs 10 crore plus on day one at the domestic box office.
