If these changes in the hands are noticed early, liver problems can be detected early and further damage can be prevented. Let’s find out what are the signs of liver damage.

Red palms

If your palms, especially the blisters under the thumb and little finger, are turning red for no apparent reason, it could be a cause for concern. This condition is called ‘Palmar Erythema’. This redness disappears temporarily when pressed and then returns. This Liver Conditions such as cirrhosis and hepatitis cause the blood vessels to dilate and make the palms appear red.

Scared nails

In this condition, almost the entire nail appears white or pale, while the tips of the nails are dark or reddish brown. It looks like the nail is coated with white polish. This condition is caused by protein deficiency in the nails and circulatory changes, often associated with liver cirrhosis, liver failure or steatosis in the liver.

Nail turning

In this situation, of the nails shape changes. The tips of the fingers become rounded and swollen, and the nails curve upwards, forming a spoon-like shape. This condition is seen in severe liver diseases as well as lung and heart diseases. Liver problems can cause this symptom by preventing proper oxygen supply to the body.

Itching of palms

Persistent itching of the palms without any rash or allergy can be a major symptom of liver damage. When the liver malfunctions, bile flow is disrupted. This causes bile to accumulate in the blood, which then flows into the skin, causing severe itching. This itching gets worse at night.

Thickening of the tissues of the palm

In this condition, the tissue under the skin of the palm begins to thicken and harden. Gradually, these tissues begin to contract, causing the fingers to bend inwards and making it difficult to straighten them. This is a common symptom of liver cirrhosis, particularly alcohol- cirrhosis.

Do not panic immediately when these symptoms appear, as they may be due to other reasons. However, if you notice any of the above symptoms in your hands that persist, do not ignore them and contact a doctor immediately.
