Miss Universe executive Nawat Itsaragrisil has been dismissed from this year’s competition after a heated confrontation with Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, earlier this week.

Miss Universe president Raúl Rocha confirmed the decision in a subtitled video posted to social media, as reported by the New York Post.

“I have restricted Nawat’s participation in the events that are part of the 74th Miss Universe competition, limiting it as much as possible or eliminating it entirely,” People quoted Rocha as saying.

Rocha condemned Nawat’s behavior, expressing “great indignation” over the “public aggression he committed against Bosch. “I will not allow the values of respect and dignity of women to be violated,” the Miss Universe president said. “Nawat, you need to stop.”

The controversy erupted during the sashing ceremony on Tuesday, when Nawat, who also heads Miss Grand International (MGI), was filmed scolding Bosch in front of other contestants during the annual sashing ceremony on Tuesday. He accused her of not promoting Thailand enough, implying her director had told her to sabotage the host country’s image.

According to CNNhe allegedly called Bosch a “dumbhead” and ordered security to remove her from the room when she tried to respond. Several contestants then walked out in solidarity, prompting officials to threaten disqualification if they didn’t return.

During the welcoming ceremony the next day, Nawat publicly apologized, saying he had not intended to hurt anyone and respected all contestants. “I have to say I’m very sorry,” he said onstage, addressing the participants, including Bosch, beside him.
