New Delhi: Indian Railways does permit pets on trains, yet the system has defined rules to keep journeys safe and orderly for all passengers. Many pet owners assume pets are allowed in every coach, but rail travel with animals comes with specific conditions. Dogs can travel with their owners inside select premium compartments, and smaller pets are given limited flexibility depending on their size and carriers. When an entire cabin is not booked, Indian Railways redirects pet movement to dedicated spaces made for secure transportation.

The aim is to manage hygiene, comfort, safety, and the varied needs of passengers across classes. The procedure also requires offline booking, which means pet owners must reach the station early to complete documentation. With the railway’s gradual shift towards modernising services, reports suggest that online booking for pets may be introduced later. For now, pet travel follows a structured system that every owner must understand before planning a trip.

Rules that govern pet travel on Indian Railways

1. Dogs in first AC or first class

Dogs are allowed inside first AC cabins or first-class compartments only when the owner books the entire space. This prevents inconvenience to co-passengers and avoids issues to allergies or discomfort. After a full-cabin booking, permission is processed through the designated railway office for a smooth clearance.

2. Restrictions in other coaches

AC sleeper, AC chair car, sleeper class, and second-class coaches do not permit dogs. These areas are heavily populated and shared by many travellers, which increases concerns to hygiene, noise, and passenger safety. To maintain order, pets are not allowed to move freely in these coaches.

3. Use of dog boxes or parcel vans

When a full cabin is not available, dogs can be transported in the brake or parcel van inside a designated dog box. This unit is designed for secure, enclosed travel. Pet owners must book this service at the station’s parcel office and complete inspection and documentation before departure.

4. Rules for small pets like kittens

Small animals that fit inside a hand basket or carrier can travel with their owners in any coach. Owners must pay the standard charge for carrying pets and ensure the animal remains safely contained throughout the journey.

5. Offline booking procedure

Pet travel booking is currently not available online. Owners must visit the parcel office at the station and complete the paperwork. Due to the time involved, arriving 1-2 hours early is advised. Reports indicate that online booking may be introduced in the future.

A clear understanding of these rules helps pet owners prepare better and ensures a smooth journey for both pets and passengers.
