Meerut, which is known for sugarcane cultivation in western Uttar Pradesh, has now started adopting new farming methods. Due to this their income is increasing and employment opportunities are also increasing. Pipli Kheda village is a great example of this change.
Ratan Singh, who earlier used to prepare plants from rose cuttings, has now become successful in growing flowers himself. He told that 20 years ago he used to cultivate flowers in only 5 bighas, but now due to increasing demand, he has started growing flowers in 60 bighas.
Tuberose, Gladiolus, Chrysanthemum, Guldavari and many exotic varieties. From these they earn a turnover of more than Rs 10 lakh annually, which also includes the expense of employee salaries.
Ratan Singh is not only enjoying his success but is also inspiring other farmers to take up flower cultivation. They help them reach the mandis and tell them how to transport the flowers to Delhi and Ghazipur markets.
Ratan says, “There are more problems in sugarcane farming and there is a delay in payment, whereas in flower farming, there are immediate profits.”
