Wednesday fans have been on tenterhooks to discover who will play the role of Wednesday Addams' Aunt Ophelia, and Netflix has finally unveiled the actress set to take on this dark character.

The second Netflix series of Wednesday was released earlier this year, concluding with a dramatic cliffhanger as Wednesday Addams (portrayed by Jenna Ortega) prepared for a road trip in search of her best mate Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), who had morphed into a werewolf.

However, as she and Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) embarked on their adventure, Wednesday experienced a vision of her Aunt Ophelia, confirming that her troubled relative was indeed still alive.

Viewers were left in suspense about who would be cast as the enigmatic aunt, with Netflix subscribers kept in the dark for months.

At last, Netflix has announced that acclaimed actress Eva Green will be stepping into the shoes of Aunt Ophelia in the third season of Wednesday.

French actress Eva Green is celebrated for her portrayals of complex and dark characters in a variety of films and television shows throughout her career.

Her notable roles include Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, The Luminaries, The Golden Compass and Camelot, to name but a few.

One of her most prominent film roles was as Vesper Lynd, the love interest and double agent in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale, alongside actor Daniel Craig.

On the small screen, Green is fondly remembered for her portrayal of Vanessa Ives in all three seasons of the Showtime and Sky Atlantic drama Penny Dreadful.

This announcement represents the first significant casting news for Wednesday's third series since its renewal was confirmed during the summer, ahead of the second season's premiere.

Similar to her niece, Ophelia possesses raven abilities, but after overextending her psychic powers, she was confined to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital by Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley), the mother of both herself and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), before managing to break free.

Ophelia was believed to have vanished without trace, but the closing scenes of series two revealed she remained alive.

However, the most startling revelation was that Ophelia had been imprisoned in Hester's basement, where she had scrawled "Wednesday must die" across the walls in blood.

But what drove Hester to imprison her own daughter, and what motivates Aunt Ophelia's deadly intentions towards Wednesday?

Wednesday is available to watch on Netflix.
