Kolkata Metro: In a major move to enhance passenger services Kolkata Metro has announced that it will operate more trains on its busy Purple Line.
In a official release issued on Thursday Kolkata Metro said at total of 84 trains will operate on the Purple Line on weekdays compared to 80 services that it operated previously. The move is aimed to benefit passengers availing local train services from the Eastern Railways Majherhat station it said.
When will services begin on Purple Line?
According to the release after the new trains are made operational services on the Kolkata Metro Purple Line will begin at 6:40 AM till 9:26 PM on weekdays.
From December 1 the first train will depart Joka at 6.40 am and Majherhat at 7.03 am. The last services will leave Joka at 9.05 pm and Majherhat at 9:26 pm it said.
Earlier services on the 7.75-km Purple Line on Saturdays were introduced from November 22 while services on the line will remain closed on Sundays.
Purple Line to connect Joka to Esplanade
According to officials construction is in full swing in the rest of the section and the Purple Line will eventually connect Joka to Esplanade in the heart of Kolkata city where it will meet the Blue and Green lines.
The Kolkata Metro which serves the Kolkata city and the Kolkata Metropolitan Region in West Bengal became operational in 1984 making it the first and oldest rapid transit system in India.
