Doomdooma, Dec 18: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has officially initiated its campaign for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, emphasizing the importance of uniting the opposition to prevent the fragmentation of anti-BJP votes. The party is committed to 'uprooting' the BJP from Assam.

During the celebrations of the party's fifth central foundation day held in historic Sadiya, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi expressed the party's determination to engage in a vigorous fight to protect Assam's land, identity, culture, and political future, while also upholding constitutional values and democracy.

Gogoi criticized the current BJP administration, claiming that the principles established by historical figures such as Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha, Raja Naranayan, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, and Madhavdev are under threat. He vowed that the party would actively oppose what he described as communal politics.

AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan announced that the campaign for the 2026 elections has officially commenced from Sadiya. He highlighted the necessity for opposition unity, stating that anti-BJP parties have agreed to nominate a single candidate to prevent vote division.

Bhuyan further alleged that the public's trust has been undermined due to repeated betrayals in the name of nationalism and regionalism, and the AJP aims to restore that trust. He noted that the party had received nearly seven lakh votes in its first electoral contest within just 100 days of its establishment.

The foundation day was marked by a full-day event at the Ganasilpi Rajib Sadiya Coordination Ground in Chawakhowa. Gogoi hoisted the party flag, while Bhuyan paid homage to martyrs.

Floral tributes were also presented to Ganasilpi Rajib Sadiya, artist Gajen Narah, and cultural figure Zubeen Garg, with the event inaugurated by AJP working president Rajen Gohain.

An open meeting, chaired by Gogoi and attended by over 5,000 party members, featured senior leaders delivering strong critiques of the ruling Central and State governments, targeting what they referred to as the 'double engine' governance.
