To prevent digital crimes, the government has blocked 1,700 Skype IDs and 59,000 WhatsApp accounts. These accounts were allegedly used for “digital arrest fraud”. This step has been taken with the aim of stopping the increasing cyber crimes in the country.
The main objective of digital arrest fraud is to scam innocent people by posing as fake police or government officials and extort money from them. In such fraud cases, criminals try to scare people through Skype, WhatsApp and other messaging platforms. They extort money from the victims by sending fake arrest orders or legal notices.
The government has deployed cyber agencies to identify suspicious accounts operating on these platforms. After investigation, it was decided to block these accounts.
The government said that to deal with such matters, coordination with digital platforms will be increased. Apart from this, a campaign will be run to make the general public aware about cyber fraud. Cyber experts have advised the general public to be cautious.
Do not immediately trust messages received from unknown numbers or emails. Report any suspicious messages or calls to police immediately. Be careful while doing digital transactions and do not click on links of unknown apps.
