Legendary French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has passed away at the age of 91, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation confirmed in an official statement. The foundation described Bardot as “a world-renowned actress and singer who chose to leave her illustrious career to dedicate her life to animal welfare.”
Bardot, born Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot, rose to international fame with her 1956 film And God Created Woman, a role that sparked both acclaim and controversy. Her career, marked by bold performances and striking charisma, made her a defining figure in French cinema of the 1950s and 1960s.
Despite her fame, Bardot faced personal struggles, including mental health challenges. In 1960, she attempted suicide while filming the courtroom drama The Truth. Reflecting on her struggles in 2010, she admitted to being “on the verge of suicide several times” and called her survival “a miracle.”
In 1973, Bardot retired from acting and turned her attention to animal rights activism. She founded the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals in 1986, dedicating her life and resources to animal welfare causes.
Reports of Bardot’s declining health emerged in October 2025, when she underwent surgery, but details surrounding her passing have not been disclosed. The French cinema world mourns the loss of a bold icon whose influence extended far beyond the silver screen.
