An exciting new twist is being introduced to the new series of BBC's The Traitors. Host Claudia Winkleman admitted that she "gasped" when she found out what it was, with a red cloak being teased in the promo.

The third season is set to air its first episode on New Years Day and fans are already eagerly anticipating what could happen. The gameshow, which had its first Celebrity version earlier this year, sees a group of 22 contestants living in a castle, while completing missions to build a cash pot. However, a few of those within the group are chosen by Claudia to be Traitors - players who 'murder' the faithfuls each night as they lie and deceive their way to the final. If they make it to the end, while remaining under the radar and aren't suspected of being a Traitor then they win a cash prize.

Discussing what audiences can anticipate with the BBC, Claudia revealed: "All I will say is there's something new and what happens in this series is truly extraordinary with moments that made me gasp. I can't wait for people to see it. The producers have the greatest minds on earth."

With the red cloak being introduced instead of the standard green cloaks, fans have been sharing their own explainations for what it could mean.

Posting to Reddit, one fan suggested: "As a Werewolf geek, I would be interested in them introducing a 'Tanner' style role into the game. For those unfamiliar, the Tanner is a character who is trying to get banished basically, and succeeds if they manage to convince people that they are a Traitor / Werewolf.

"It adds another layer of deception because you start viewing 'traitor' behaviours differently as someone is deliberately trying to get 'caught'. For the purposes of the TV show you could basically offer the Tanner a £ share of the prize pot but they leave the game straight away.

"Unfortunately, I think this is probably just a little bit too complicated for the TV show, and there aren't clear enough 'signals' that someone is a Traitor to really make the role work."

Another suggested: "I get the feeling that it's like a traitor who we as the audience also don't know the identity of and have to like work out who it is! Should be interesting."

A third theorised: "My Theory: Another role called the Serial Killer. They can side with the Traitors or go until the end with the Faithful. Not sure how twist heavy they want it to be. They can have a random murder instead of the mafia. Sabotage challenges? Or they can only be the sole winner?"

One more person wrote: "I'd like to see two teams of traitors and neither knows who the others are. Two reds and two greens. They don't know there are two teams and they can murder each other."
