Bihar: The political atmosphere in Bihar has once again drawn public attention after senior state leaders commented on allegations related to land ownership and legality. The issue revolves around claims concerning property linked to Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and the conditions under which a formal investigation could be initiated. While no official complaint has yet been filed, the state government’s response has opened a wider discussion on transparency, land governance, and administrative accountability in Bihar.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha recently stated that the government would not hesitate to examine alleged irregularities in land ownership if a formal and valid complaint is submitted. His remarks came after political voices questioned the legality of land on which a new residential property associated with Lalu Prasad is reportedly under construction in Patna. The statement makes it clear that the state administration is keeping its doors open for scrutiny, provided the issue is raised through officially recognized channels.
The deputy chief minister emphasized that the appropriate platform for raising such concerns is the Jan Kalyan Samvad program. These grievance redressal meetings are being conducted across various districts of Bihar with the aim of resolving land-related disputes and public complaints. According to Sinha, if any citizen submits an application regarding the alleged land matter during these sessions, the concerned officials will examine it and initiate an inquiry if required. This approach highlights the government’s intent to follow due process rather than act on political speculation or media debates.
The issue gained momentum after Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar publicly demanded that the revenue and land reforms department verify the legality of the land in question. His demand reflects a broader political strategy where parties seek accountability from rivals while positioning themselves as supporters of clean governance. The Bihar Revenue Service Association has raised concerns regarding the conduct and style of the deputy chief minister during these meetings. In a formal letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the association alleged that the manner in which sessions are conducted has undermined the dignity of the revenue administration and exposed officers to public criticism. These concerns underline the delicate balance between political oversight and administrative autonomy.
Responding to the criticism, Vijay Kumar Sinha maintained that he would continue with the grievance meetings and remain firm in his campaign against illegal land practices. He reiterated that tackling land mafia activities and simplifying land-related processes for ordinary citizens remain his top priorities. From the government’s perspective, such initiatives are essential to restoring public trust in land governance, which has long been plagued by disputes, encroachments, and alleged corruption.
