New Delhi. If you also travel by flights, then this news is for you. Actually, India has implemented strict rules regarding power banks and lithium battery devices in flights. DGCA has banned the use of power banks to charge phones or other things during flights. Many incidents of fire from power banks have been reported across the world, after which this strict step has been taken.

DGCA had issued an advisory regarding this in November last year. It was said that power banks and spare batteries would be allowed to be carried only in hand luggage. It cannot be kept in the overhead compartment. The reason behind the fire was explained and it was said that when a fire occurs, it becomes difficult to control it.

Lithium batteries catch fire very quickly because this battery has a lot of energy. It also becomes difficult to control this fire. Aviation safety experts say that even a small battery fire inside the aircraft cabin can spread rapidly, so prevention is very important.

“The widespread use of lithium batteries in various rechargeable devices has led to an increase in carrying of lithium batteries by airplanes. Power banks, portable chargers and similar devices containing lithium batteries can cause ignition and cause fire on board aircraft,” the DGCA circular said. “Lithium batteries stored in overhead storage bins or inside carry-on baggage may be hidden, difficult to access, or not easily monitored by passengers or crew members. This may delay detection and response to a smoke or fire, increasing the risk to flight safety,” it added.

As per current aviation safety guidelines, power banks are allowed to be carried only in cabin baggage and not in check-in luggage. However, passengers are not allowed to charge devices from power banks during the flight. Airlines have now started reminding passengers about this restriction through boarding announcements and inflight briefings.
