ChatGPT has become the world’s fastest-growing consumer product with 800 million weekly active users (WAU) and close to a million business customers.
In a bid to continue this momentum, Fidji Simo, CEO of applications at OpenAI, has revealed that the roadmap for the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant entails transforming it into a more intuitive product-connected super-assistant.
“In 2026, ChatGPT will become more than a chatbot you can talk to to get advice and answers; it will evolve into a true personal super-assistant that helps you get things done. It will understand your goals, remember context over time, and proactively help you make progress across the things that matter most. This requires a shift from a reactive chatbot to a more intuitive product connected to all the important people and services in your life, in a privacy-safe way,” Simo wrote in a substack note today.
Hinting at more products coming out of the GPT AI models, Simo revealed that the team is doubling down on developing collaboration features, such as group messages, to enable users with multiplayer workflows.
“With memory enabling greater personalisation and Pulse working on your behalf, ChatGPT will know what matters to you and will proactively help you get things done in your life. Our ecosystem of apps will connect users to all the services needed to get things done in the real world. Our multimodal investments — ImageGen, VideoGen, speech-to-speech, and broader GenUI — will make ChatGPT more dynamic, and Sora will continue to be a hub for creative expression,” Simo added.
However, Simo also said 2026 could see the groundwork being laid for a new generation of ChatGPT-led devices from the parent company. She added that these devices will focus on multimodal interaction with shared contexts while prioritising privacy.
