According to Valmiki Ramayana, once when King Janak was plowing the earth with a plow to accomplish a particular task. Then his plow collided with something hard. There was an urn at that place. There was a beautiful girl in the urn. King Janak considered that girl as his daughter and raised her like his own child. The tip of the plow is called Sita, hence King Janak named the girl Sita.
