Gotra is seen as an important identity in Sanatan Dharma. This is the identity that connects a person to his original lineage. Gotra tells about the lineage that has been going on since the time of the ancestors. Indian society has systematically preserved the family system, traditions and customs since ancient times and has adopted the Gotra system as a standard basis.

Actually, the Sanskrit word 'Go' has many meanings. It refers to concepts like knowledge, Vedas, land and cow. From this point of view, Gotra can be considered as a concept that reflects the inheritance of knowledge passed down from generations and not just limited to blood relations, hence Gotra is also considered as spiritual lineage.

Gotra tradition that has been going on since the Vedic period

In the Vedic period, major gotras were formed in the names of seven sages like Vashishtha, Bhardwaj, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Kashyap and Jamadagni. These sages are considered to be the original gurus of many dynasties. Each Gotra represents a tradition imparted by a particular sage and the lineage of the sage to which a person belongs can be identified through the Gotra.

With time, as the society expanded, new clans were formed. The Gotra system became widespread with the formation of sub-clans named after prominent ancestors, dynasties and people who guided the society. Thus Gotra became not only a religious concept but also a symbol of social and cultural heritage.

Importance of Gotra in rituals

In Sanatan Dharma, the practice of not having marriage relations between people of the same Gotra has been going on since ancient times. This has been considered a prudent rule to preserve the lineage and maintain the natural balance. Similarly, in worship, Shraddha and Upanayana rituals, ancestors are remembered by reciting Gotra.

a strong bond with ancestors
