Assembly elections are to be held in Tamil Nadu in the next few months, and political turmoil has already started regarding this. However, there appears to be some discord regarding seat sharing in the ruling coalition in the state. After key ally Congress expressed concern over the “delay” in starting talks on seat sharing for the elections, the DMK has now announced that a panel will be formed to start talks from next week (February 22).
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the state, allaying Congress's displeasure, said that party president and Chief Minister MK Stalin will soon form a panel in this regard. A statement issued by the party's state headquarters Anna Arivalayam said, "DMK constituency seat-sharing committee, which will be formed by the party president soon, will then start talks with allies from February 22, when the assembly session ends."
This announcement made by the party late on Tuesday night came after Congress claimed that it has started talks with DMK, but it has not taken any step on its part to start talks.
Earlier on Tuesday, Congress in-charge in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Girish Chodankar expressed concern over the “delay” in formation of seat-sharing committee by DMK.
He said that although he met Stalin and started talks on behalf of the party, DMK has not yet formed its own panel to start talks. He mentioned the 5-member committee headed by him which met Stalin in early December 2025.
Congress leader Chodankar said, “We have been waiting since then and are hoping that they will immediately start talks and clarify the number of seats and from which constituencies we will contest so that we can fully prepare for the elections.” Describing it as “sad”, he said that DMK has not yet formed a committee or started talks, while our leaders are curious about it and asking why alliance talks have not started.
