Team GB speed skater Niall Treacy crashed out again in the Winter Olympics, just 24 hours after being penalised in the 1500m short track event on Sunday. The world No.22 had a chance of redemption in the men's 500m event, but his struggles continued.

On Monday, Treacy competed in heat 8 alongside Andrew Heo, Xiajun Lin and Jongun Rim. In the final stretch, after previously losing control and falling to the ground, the 25-year-old crashed after previously making contact with Jongun. As Treacy attempted to rush to the front and make-up ground, he lost his footing and slid into the wall, as his opponents crossed the line. Heo was the winner with Lin and Rim shortly behind.

Xiaojun of China finished second while Jongun finished third, nearly 14 seconds ahead of Treacy, who finished some time after his opponents by the time he reached the finish line.

On Sunday, Treacy finished sixth in the 1500m final, but had his position removed due to a penalty. It meant he dropped down to ninth, despite finishing almost 40 seconds ahead of the seventh-placed Shoaong Liu of China.

Post-race, Treacy revealed that he had not seen those behind him because of the focus on keeping pace with those in front. The incident came after he got tangled up with Chinese pair Long Sun and Shaoang Lui.

Following a lengthy review, the decision to remove Treacy's position was announced. "It's not the result that you want when you go to the final," he said.

"I was skating really well, and I've only seen the review quickly, but I didn't see the guy; I felt like I was still trying to build speed, I had got two of the best guys in front of me, so I was actually trying to set up to go back past them because I felt like I was in a really good position from today, I feel really strong.

"If you told me at the start of the day, 'You're gonna be in an Olympic Game final,' maybe I wouldn't have believed you, so yeah, it's not the result, but I'm really proud of what I did today, hopefully, the guys back home in the sport, and the people watching were proud because, yeah, I had fun today."
