Oleksandr Usyk's three-fight retirement plan has major flaw

Oleksandr Usyk may not be able to secure his dream three-fight send-off.

The unified heavyweight world champion recently mapped out his retirement plan which will start in Egypt on May 23 against former kickboxing world champion Rico Verhoeven. Usyk then wants to fight then winner of Fabio Wardley's title defence against Daniel Dubois which takes place two weeks earlier, before a trilogy bout with Tyson Fury.

That would see the great rivals meet for all four belts, assuming Fury comes through his comeback bout against Arslanbek Makhmudov next month. But it is unlikely Usyk can dictate his own terms entirely after opting to defend his WBC belt against Verhoeven.

Assuming he overcomes the Dutchman, Usyk will be ordered to defend his green-and-gold belt against Agit Kabayel who holds the sanctioning body's interim belt. Should Usyk instead opt to give up the belt, a fight with the winner of Wardley-Dubois would make little sense without all four belts on the line.

Usyk had the chance to face Wardley when the fight was ordered by the WBO but chose instead to give up the title. "Maybe he wants to get the four belts back," said promoter Frank Warren. "But he had those opportunities and we were very disappointed he didn't fight Fabio."

And while a clash with Wardley would appeal, a third meeting with Dubois would be a hard sell after Usyk's two stoppage victories over the Brit. Which leaves another scenario which could still lead to an undisputed fight in 12 months time.

Should Fury impress against Makhmudov, a fight with the winner of Wardley-Dubois makes sense. Two Brits, both with Warren, and both with good storylines. That should be a no-brainer for a stadium in September - and perhaps Fury can finally walk out at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United.

"It’s a great fight, all-domestic affair," added Warren. "It’s a brilliant fight and if they want to do it, they’ll l do it. We’re at the stage now with these guys where the fights have to be made. They’re professional fighters, they want to make the best money they can, they want to get the opportunities to prove they’re the best. And the fact that most of the best heavyweight are with us, it makes a lot of sense for it to happen."

That would leave the winner of the domestic clash to face the winner of Usyk-Kabayel for all four belts early next year, leaving us with another undisputed heavyweight champion.
