Kolkata, March 25: In a shocking incident, a son reportedly killed his mother by strangling her during a heated argument over her remarriage in Baguihati, North Kolkata, as per police reports on Wednesday.

After committing the crime, the suspect allegedly locked the room and fled the scene. Authorities later discovered the body and transported it to a hospital for an autopsy.

As per police information, Ranjit Chakraborty and his wife, Ruma Chakraborty, had been living in a rented ground-floor apartment in the Jagatpur area of Baguihati for about six months. On Tuesday, Ruma's son from a previous marriage, Rudradeep, came to visit her.

Witnesses indicated that a fierce argument broke out between Ruma and Rudradeep concerning her new marriage. The dispute escalated, resulting in a physical confrontation. It is alleged that in a moment of rage, Rudradeep strangled his mother with a scarf, stole her gold jewelry, and then locked the door before escaping.

Ranjit Chakraborty returned home late that night to find the door locked from the outside. Concerned, he reached out to relatives to check if Ruma had gone to their homes. After receiving no answers, he contacted the landlord, obtained a spare key, and entered the apartment. There, he found Ruma's body on the bed, with a scarf tightly wrapped around her neck. The incident was promptly reported to the Baguihati Police Station, who arrived to gather evidence and forensic samples.

"The body was sent to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday morning for an autopsy. The exact cause of death will be determined after the preliminary report is available. A case has been filed based on the complaint from the woman's husband, and efforts are underway to locate her son from the previous marriage," stated a senior Kolkata Police officer. Investigations revealed that the son has a history of drug addiction.

Authorities are currently examining the motive behind the crime, including whether financial disputes contributed to the tragic event.
