According to The Starthe ceremony was held on March 22. The Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards are widely regarded as a key indicator ahead of the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Liew, 36, earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of Mui, an artist born with cerebral palsy. Earlier this year, she also received Best Actress from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society.

Speaking about the recognition, Liew said she was surprised by the strong support from Hong Kong’s awards bodies, according to Yahoo! Life Singapore.

Born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Liew grew up in a strict household, she told the South China Morning Post. According to the actress, her father, a chef who worked overseas, would bring home DVDs that sparked her early interest in film.

She began her career in 2009 with a role in a television soap opera, but soon sought opportunities beyond Malaysia.

While modeling and taking on small acting roles, she sent her portfolio to markets including Beijing, Taiwan and Bangkok. In 2012, she moved to Hong Kong to pursue modeling and landed her first acting role there the following year.

Liew has since built a steady career with notable projects including “A Guilty Conscience,” which became the highest-grossing Hong Kong film at the time of its release in 2023.
