Nature wreaks havoc in Sikkim, 800 tourists stranded due to collapse of Lachen-Chungthang road, advisory issued

In Sikkim, the road connecting Lachen to Chungthang in Mangan district was closed for traffic after it collapsed, leaving more than 800 tourists stranded there. Officials said the road was damaged near Tarum Chu bridge on Lachen-Chungthang road. He said the Mangan district administration has issued a public advisory and announced temporary closure of the road near Tarum Chu bridge, affecting 800 tourists stranded in Lachen.

According to officials, all tourists present in Lachen have been instructed to remain where they are and avoid any movement overnight due to inclement weather conditions and potential risks along the way.

Many agencies including Indian Army launched the campaign

Authorities plan to launch a evacuation operation on Monday (today) to rescue the stranded tourists, provided weather conditions improve and snow can be successfully cleared on the Dongkya La route. The district administration is working closely with multiple agencies including the police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organization (BRO) and the Indian Army to ensure safe and timely evacuation.
