In a significant boost for young job seekers, the Government of India has upgraded the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) under its latest 3.0 version. The revamped initiative introduces a higher monthly stipend and broader eligibility, aiming to equip students with practical skills and industry exposure while they continue their education.

Stipend Increased to ₹9,000 per Month

One of the biggest highlights of the updated scheme is the substantial hike in financial support. Under PMIS 3.0, interns will now receive ₹9,000 per month, compared to the earlier ₹5,000. The government will bear nearly 90% of this cost, ensuring that participants receive meaningful financial assistance during their internship period.

In addition to the monthly stipend, selected candidates will also get an extra ₹6,000, which will be disbursed in two installments. Since the internship duration is fixed at one year, the total financial benefit provided by the government can go up to approximately ₹1.14 lakh per intern.

Wider Eligibility: Students Aged 18–25 Can Apply

The government has also relaxed the age criteria to include more young aspirants. Earlier, only candidates between 21 and 24 years were eligible. Now, students aged 18 to 25 years can apply, opening doors for a larger pool of candidates.

Moreover, final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students are also eligible to participate. However, applicants pursuing studies must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their respective educational institutions before applying.

Focus on Real-World Skills and Experience

The primary objective of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme is to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements. By offering hands-on experience in real work environments, the scheme prepares students for future employment opportunities.

Interns will gain exposure to essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This practical training is expected to significantly enhance their employability and confidence when entering the job market.

Large-Scale Employment Vision

The government has set an ambitious target to provide internship opportunities to 10 million (1 crore) youth over the next five years. These internships will be offered across the top 500 companies in India, ensuring high-quality industry exposure.

So far, more than 300 companies have already partnered with the scheme, indicating strong industry participation. This collaboration between the government and the private sector is expected to create a robust ecosystem for skill development and employment readiness.

Added Benefits: Insurance Coverage for Interns

Participants under PMIS 3.0 will also receive insurance benefits, making the scheme even more attractive. Interns will be covered under government-backed schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.

These insurance covers ensure financial security in case of unforeseen circumstances, adding another layer of support for young participants.

A Step Towards Job-Ready India

With rising competition in the job market, having practical experience is becoming just as important as academic qualifications. The upgraded PMIS 3.0 aims to address this challenge by giving students early exposure to professional environments.

By combining financial support, skill development, and industry experience, the scheme is expected to play a crucial role in shaping a job-ready workforce. It not only helps students transition smoothly from education to employment but also strengthens India’s long-term economic growth.

Conclusion

The revamped Prime Minister Internship Scheme 3.0 marks a major step forward in youth empowerment. With higher stipends, expanded eligibility, and strong industry collaboration, the initiative offers a valuable opportunity for students to kickstart their careers.

For young individuals looking to gain real-world experience while earning financial support, this scheme could serve as a strong foundation for future success.
