Nalbari, Apr 23: A tragic event unfolded at Nalbari District Jail on Thursday, where an inmate reportedly took his own life, prompting serious concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The individual has been identified as Shukra Kamar, aged 47, also referred to as Lodha Kamar. Reports indicate that he used a Gamosa to end his life.

Kamar had been incarcerated at Nalbari District Jail since 2011, facing charges in a murder case that remains unresolved.

“We were taken aback by the news. It was shocking to learn that he had committed suicide,” shared a family member.

The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Family members noted that he seemed to be in good spirits during their recent visits.

“We visited him about six months ago, and he was doing fine. My sisters also saw him in between. I’m unsure what led to this. He was expected to be released soon—I had plans to meet him this week,” his son expressed.

Kamar was originally from Sesapani in Kumarikata, Tamulpur district. His family mentioned that his prison term was nearing its end, with just a month or two left.

“We were aware that this was his final term, but we cannot comprehend why he would take such drastic action. It remains a mystery,” a relative remarked.

This incident has raised significant questions about the factors that contributed to his death, especially given that he was close to completing his sentence.
