Brits with one common condition could receive £778 in May from the Government, following an uprate to benefit payments. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) increased Personal Independence Payment (PIP) on April 6 by 3.8% in line with inflation, meaning those with certain disabilities or illnesses, including Musculoskeletal conditions, could receive more money in May.

PIP is issued to Brits who struggle with daily tasks or getting around independently, due to health conditions or disabilities, and some health issues are far more common than others among claimants. Psychiatric disorders account for the largest share of claims at 39%, followed by Musculoskeletal conditions, which made up more than 740,000 claims, highlighting just how many people rely on the support.

Following the April increase, potential monthly payments increased to £778.40, for those who qualify for the highest rates for both the daily living and the mobility component.

The daily living component supports those who need help with everyday tasks due to their condition or disability, such as eating, washing or dressing, while the mobility payment supports those who struggle to get around independently.

The daily living component rose from £100.40 to £114.60 per week for the enhanced rate, and from £73.90 to £76.70 for the standard rate.

The mobility component rose to £80 per week for the higher rate, and £30.30 for the lower rate, up from £77.05 and £29.20, respectively.

As of April 30 last year, around 3.7 million people in England and Wales were claiming PIP, according to care provider, HomeCare.

Of those, 37% were receiving the highest level of award, meaning roughly a million people could benefit from a serious boost to their payments.

The rate you receive depends on how your condition affects you, and this is determined by an assessment from an independent health professional.
