Punjab launches large-scale sports infrastructure drive, inaugurates new field in Kharar village

A newly developed sports ground was inaugurated in Kaleval village of the Kharar constituency, marking the beginning of a wider rollout of sports infrastructure across Punjab. The facility was formally opened in the presence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also met local players and distributed sports kits during the event. The initiative is positioned as part of a broader effort to engage youth in structured physical activities and reduce their exposure to substance abuse by encouraging participation in sports. Local athletes and residents attended the event, highlighting interest in improved sports amenities in rural areas.
The project forms part of a statewide plan involving the construction of 3,100 modern sports grounds, with an estimated investment of ₹1,250 crore. Officials indicated that 250 such grounds have been completed in the first phase and opened for public use, while the remaining are expected to be finalized by mid-July. The facilities are being equipped with features such as floodlighting, walking tracks, and dedicated courts for games including volleyball and hockey. These additions are intended to support both recreational use and competitive training, especially in regions where access to such infrastructure has been limited.
Alongside the development of modern facilities, there has also been mention of reviving traditional sporting practices, including events like bullock cart races, as part of efforts to preserve cultural heritage. The initiative reflects a dual focus on modernization and cultural continuity within the sports ecosystem. While the expansion of infrastructure may provide new opportunities for aspiring athletes, its long-term impact will depend on accessibility, maintenance, and sustained engagement at the grassroots level.
