OpenAI, the AI company that created ChatGPT, is now preparing to challenge Apple and Samsung. According to media reports, the company is working on the first AI phone, in which, instead of navigating between multiple apps, users will rely on AI to complete their tasks. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in an X post that OpenAI is rapidly advancing the development of its first AI agent smartphone and is expected to start mass production by the first half of 2027. According to Kuo, there is increasing competition in the field of AI powered smartphones or agent phones, where companies are racing to provide more advanced AI features.

The processor of the smartphone will be based on Dimensity 9600 and it will be made using TSMC N2P node (2nm-class semiconductor node). It is expected that its production can start in the second half of 2026. Talking about other main features, dual-NPU architecture will be used for AI compute, LPDDR6 + UFS 5.0 to remove memory bottlenecks and pKVM and inline hashing for security. Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in an X post that if development continues at the right pace, total shipments could reach about 30 million units in 2027-2028.
Kuo said in his previous post about phones that OpenAI is now focusing on AI agent phones, because phones have access to location, activity, communication, and context; Because of which AI agents work better on phones than on any other device. In terms of business model, OpenAI can bundle subscriptions with hardware and create a new AI agent ecosystem involving developers.
