A significant blow has hit the Dhannotu–Laleta–Banu road project in the Kangra district, as the newly built Chambi Khad bridge at Shahpur has collapsed prior to its official opening.
This project, which was estimated to cost around ₹9.70 crore, included a bridge component valued at approximately ₹2.50 crore. Just a month ago, it was reported that construction was nearing completion after the relocation of transmission lines. However, heavy rainfall and increased water flow led to the unexpected failure of the bridge's superstructure.
As per PWD Chief Engineer Vikas Sood, the persistent rainfall resulted in settlement issues with the shuttering and base, which ultimately caused the collapse. He assured that the abutments are still intact.
This incident has raised serious concerns regarding soil testing, water flow evaluations, load calculations, and quality control during the construction phase. Experts emphasize that any bridge project must strictly follow DPR preparation, design approvals, soil investigations, and departmental oversight.
In response, the Himachal Pradesh PWD has formed an inquiry team to examine the technical shortcomings and establish accountability within the department.
