Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve fuel, the Gujarat government has stepped into action, exploring multiple strategies to reduce petrol and diesel consumption across the state.

Authorities have begun intensifying efforts to ease traffic congestion and promote fuel efficiency through a series of policy-level interventions.

Deliberations Begin on Work From Home Model

Cabinet Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya stated that the government is seriously considering reintroducing the Work From Home (WFH) model for employees. The move is aimed at reducing the number of vehicles on roads, which could lead to significant fuel savings. Inputs have been sought from various government departments to assess the feasibility of the proposal.

Private Sector to Be Brought On Board

The government also plans to involve the private sector in this initiative. Meetings with leading companies, industry representatives, and associations are expected in the coming days. Firms may be encouraged to allow employees to work from home for a few days each week or arrange common transportation facilities to reduce individual vehicle usage.

Focus on Public Transport Usage

To further cut fuel consumption, the government will urge citizens to rely more on public transport. Efforts will be made to strengthen services such as state-run buses and metro systems, making them more accessible and efficient. Additionally, policies promoting cycling and electric vehicles are also under consideration.

Economic and Environmental Goals

The initiative aims to achieve two key objectives: reducing fuel import costs to support the economy and lowering vehicular emissions to protect the environment. If successfully implemented, the WFH model could position Gujarat as a national benchmark in fuel conservation efforts.
