After making only a handful of short appearances during his Bundesliga loan stint, young midfielder Felipe Chavez is now expected to make his way back to FC Bayern Munich.

1. FC Köln have decided not to trigger the purchase clause, paving the path for the 19-year-old’s return to the Bavarian giants.

On the last day of the winter transfer window, Felipe Chavez joined 1. FC Köln on loan. However, as per reports from Sky, the Cologne-based club will not take up their option to buy, meaning the Peruvian youngster will rejoin FC Bayern Munich for the time being.

Back in March, the Abendzeitung reported that 1. FC Köln had plans to make the deal permanent. Despite Chavez only featuring briefly under then-coach Luka Kwasniok, the club had charted out a clear plan for his progression. Sporting director Thomas Kessler had said at the time, “We want to introduce him to the Bundesliga gradually, step by step.”

Had the Cologne side gone ahead with the deal, which was said to be worth a mid-single-digit million fee, Bayern Munich would still have retained a buy-back clause, allowing them to re-sign the Peruvian talent in either 2027 or 2028 — a reflection of his high standing within the Bayern setup.

So far, Chavez has seen limited action for both Munich and Cologne.

Unlike the case with Noel Aseko, Bayern Munich did not need to trigger any clause for Chavez’s return. However, the Peruvian international featured sparingly during Cologne’s relegation battle.

Even after René Wagner took over from the dismissed coach, the versatile midfielder found opportunities hard to come by. He made a total of seven appearances, amassing just 96 minutes on the pitch. His longest spell came on matchday 32, when he played 28 minutes in central midfield during a 2-2 draw against Union Berlin — which also turned out to be his final appearance for the club.

Earlier, Chavez had made his Bundesliga debut for the German record champions. In January, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany had given him two brief run-outs, totalling twelve minutes, against VfL Wolfsburg and FC Augsburg.

The left-footed midfielder is still awaiting his first goal or assist at the top level, and his contract with FC Bayern Munich runs through to 2027.
