Francesco Pio Esposito scored the decisive goal for the Italian national team in their friendly against Luxembourg on Wednesday (3 June 2026).
Playing with an experimental lineup, Italy narrowly defeated Luxembourg by a single goal from Francesco Pio Esposito.
The early June FIFA Matchday marked a new chapter for Italy following their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Gli Azzurri initiated a major overhaul to rebuild their football structure from the ground up, beginning with an away trip to Luxembourg.
Competing at the Stade de Luxembourg on Wednesday (3 June 2026) local time, Italy laboured to overcome the hosts, who are considered one of Europe’s minnows.
Following Gennaro Gattuso’s departure, interim boss Silvio Baldini took charge of La Nazionale.
He used this friendly match as a full-scale experiment to assess young talent.
Out of 25 players called up, only four had prior senior international experience with Italy.
They were goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who captained the side and stood as the most experienced member (81 caps), defender Marco Palestra (2 caps), midfielder Niccolo Pisilli (2 caps), and striker Francesco Pio Esposito (7 caps).
The remaining 21 players all made their senior debut in this game.
Eight of them were even drawn from lower-division Italian clubs.
Aside from Donnarumma (27 years old), every other member of this experimental squad was aged 22 or younger, effectively forming an Italy U-22 team.
The dominance of inexperienced players made Italy’s overall performance comparable to Luxembourg, ranked 93rd in the world and winless in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
The first half ended goalless, with Gli Azzurri attempting seven shots compared to Luxembourg’s three.
The team’s most seasoned forward, Pio Esposito, led Italy’s charge, creating his first chance in the 24th minute.
The Inter Milan striker’s back-heel shot missed the post by a few centimetres.
Soon after, the 20-year-old forward came close again with a volley that drifted wide.
Pisilli added another threat with a tight-angle shot that struck the side netting.
Further chances from Luca Koleosho and Pio Esposito before halftime still failed to break the deadlock.
In the second half, Italy finally found the breakthrough.
Unable to score from open play, a set-piece became their solution to crack Luxembourg’s defence.
A perfectly executed corner from Pisilli found Pio Esposito, whose header deflected into the net.
That goal marked Pio Esposito’s fourth for the Azzurri in his eighth appearance.
Italy increased their pressure, with Pisilli’s strike inside the box hitting the post.
Seydou Fini followed with a missed opportunity, blasting the ball over from a promising position.
In the remaining minutes, neither side managed to add to the score despite creating more chances.
Italy secured a narrow 1-0 victory, signalling a new era for La Nazionale as they fielded a total of 15 debutants.
Next, the young Italian squad will wrap up their June friendly schedule with an away trip to Greece on Sunday (7 June 2026).
After completing their two June FIFA Matchday fixtures, Italian fans will have to watch the 2026 World Cup from home.
