How Hansi Flick Could Utilise Bernardo Silva’s Versatility at Barcelona

For several years, the idea of Bernardo Silva joining Barcelona seemed like a recurring transfer saga that reignited every summer without ever reaching a conclusion.

The Portuguese midfielder has long appeared destined to don the Blaugrana colours at some stage of his career, but a combination of Barcelona’s financial constraints and Silva’s professional ambitions repeatedly prevented the move from materialising.

Now, just as many had written off any possibility of this transfer, the situation has changed dramatically in Barcelona’s favour.

Bernardo Silva’s contract with Manchester City came to an end following the 2025/26 season, and reports suggest that Hansi Flick has approved the move for him to join Barcelona.

The most logical way to view Bernardo’s potential contribution is as a top-tier rotational midfielder — not a direct replacement for Pedri, but a player capable of easing his workload.

For years, Barcelona have found it difficult to manage Pedri’s playing time without losing balance in midfield. The young Canary Islander remains a unique profile within the squad, one without a like-for-like alternative.

Bernardo Silva brings the exact qualities needed to address that issue — composure, technical ability, press resistance, and defensive work rate — all key components in a possession-driven system.

Manchester City’s style under Pep Guardiola revolved around Bernardo for several seasons, much like Barcelona’s system has evolved around Pedri. Bringing both into the same setup offers Flick significant tactical luxury.

Although the two players differ stylistically, both can function within similar roles. Pedri’s recurring fitness challenges have been a concern, and having Bernardo to share responsibilities could help Flick manage the Spaniard’s minutes more effectively.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Barcelona signed Roony Bardghji as a backup right winger for Lamine Yamal. The Swedish youngster showed flashes of brilliance but struggled to find consistent playing time.

Given his age, Roony requires regular minutes to develop, something nearly impossible when competing with Lamine Yamal for a starting spot.

This opens the door for Barcelona to consider moving Bardghji in the summer transfer window and bringing in a more experienced backup for their No.10 position — a role Bernardo Silva could fill perfectly.

Beyond midfield duties, Bernardo’s value extends to the right flank. While he lacks Lamine Yamal’s explosiveness and one-on-one flair, he compensates with calmness, tactical intelligence, and an ability to maintain control in tight matches.

Such attributes would be particularly valuable in European fixtures, where Flick’s side will look to balance high intensity with composure in possession. Bernardo excels in providing that equilibrium.

Flick could also deploy him as a central attacking midfielder in situations demanding an additional creative passer behind the main striker. Nevertheless, players like Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo are currently well established in that position.

In essence, Bernardo Silva doesn’t resolve a single major issue for Barcelona; instead, he offers solutions to several smaller tactical challenges simultaneously.

He is the type of player every manager desires — a versatile, intelligent footballer who gives his all regardless of the role assigned to him.

Bernardo’s arrival won’t be to become the main star at Camp Nou. Rather, he’ll be joining a team already filled with talent, much like Katherine Heigl entering the penultimate season of the popular show ‘Suits’ — not to outshine the cast, but to bring more depth and value to an already successful project. That’s precisely the kind of addition Hansi Flick is looking for at this stage.
